Baker writes in today’s Standard English without losing the meaning of the original, though he does add explanations to clarify at times. Line drawings present the characters of Scripture in an up-to-date mode in shirts and jeans that kids can identify with. Also, because this is just one book, it is light, thin and not overwhelming for a less-than-enthusiastic reader.

This version of Mark is a great tool to use with Tweens who may not go near that heavy, dust-covered KJV family Bible.

Matthew’s Story is another edition in the Gospel Storyteller Series  which was started to enable children to read, understand, enjoy and discuss what the Bible has tosay. The text is written as if the Bible author were telling the story to his grandchildren. Matthew’s Story is based on the Gospel of Matthew. The book is written in the first person narrative as if Matthew, the businessman, is actually telling the story of his friend, Jesus. It is a natural bridge between the Bible storybook and the Bible itself.

From years spent in a classroom setting, Dr. Marvin G. Baker observed one of the most frustrating things for a student is the lack of comprehension of what they’ve read. Telling them to “Read it again” makes little sense when one just doesn’t understand what has already been read. Many of us have the same experience when reading the Bible. Matthew’s Story is Dr. Baker’s attempt to help us understand what we’ve read when a teacher is not there to help.

The books in the Gospel Storyteller Series are not intended as translations of the Bible. They do include the geography and culture of that day which helps to create a clear picture. The conversational style of presentation of the series is intentional. Providing vivid details to make a story come alive will hopefully create a desire to hear more. The Bible is a history of actions and consequences from which we may gain information about how to repeat or avoid similar results.

Reading books in the Gospel Storyteller Series should help one to know God better and to become a better Christian, no matter what the age. Christian education teachers and parents will definitely find this a worthy resource, but Matthew’s Story is for anyone with a desire to know more about understanding the Bible. I recommend Matthew’s Story to one and all!
