Tweener Literacy LANGUAGE ARTS CURRICULUM
We are pleased to announce the Tweener Literacy Language Arts Curriculum. Our curriculum is designed especially for aliterates--those reluctant readers who can read but aren't interested in reading voluntarily--and those who listen to a different drummer and want a different approach in order to learn the joy of reading. In the development process we discovered that good students enjoy this approach as well, more fun . . . more variety.
Piloted in Christian schools in 2005 we found a process that is an effective way to engage reluctant readers. The effectiveness of the pilot project was the catalyst for the development of the Tweener Literacy Curriculum (TLC). Our curriculum is designed especially for aliterates--those who can read but aren't interested in reading voluntarily--and those who listen to a different drummer and need a different approach in order to learn the joy of reading.
Literacy is more than reading. No adult is ever asked, “What is your reading level?” However, every time we speak we reveal our knowledge, to some extent our intelligence, and our culture. The major emphasis should not be placed on reading alone. We must be developing all four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Effective communication must be the goal of our educational efforts.
Learning is not limited to the printed page. The extreme attention to reading levels has created prideful students and parents who are quick to tell you if there child is reading above grade level. And it has also created frustrated students and distraught parents who lower performance expectation because they are falling behind in this vital language skill. Too often it is assumed that the poor reader has nothing to contribute to the discussion. Tragic mistake!
Let me point out that it is as logical to expect every child to be at the same place on the height and weight charts as it is to assume they should all be reading at the same level.
We believe it is vital to help students learn discussion skills and through that gain ability to logically present their viewpoints. We must make reading a means to an end not and end itself.
The complete Tweener Literacy Curriculum will be posted near October 1, 2008. It is a true language arts curriculum. It is designed especially for emerging readers and those beyond third grade who listen to a different drummer. Those who find the traditional language arts curriculum irrelevant or are plagued by aliteracy, the ability to read but the lack of interest in reading, will especially appreciate the Tweener Literacy Curriculum.
