Tweener Literacy
LANGUAGE ARTS CURRICULUM

We are pleased to announce the Tweener Literacy Language Arts Curriculum. Our curriculum is designed especially for aliterates--those reluctant readers who can read but aren't interested in reading voluntarily--and those who listen to a different drummer and want a different approach in order to learn the joy of reading. In the development process we discovered that good students enjoy this approach as well, more fun . . . more variety.

Piloted in Christian schools in 2005 we found a process that is an effective way to engage reluctant readers. The effectiveness of the pilot project was the catalyst for the development of the Tweener Literacy Curriculum (TLC). Our curriculum is designed especially for aliterates--those who can read but aren't interested in reading voluntarily--and those who listen to a different drummer and need a different approach in order to learn the joy of reading.

Literacy is more than reading. No adult is ever asked, “What is your reading level?” However, every time we speak we reveal our knowledge, to some extent our intelligence, and our culture. The major emphasis should not be placed on reading alone. We must be developing all four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Effective communication must be the goal of our educational efforts.

Learning is not limited to the printed page.
The extreme attention to reading levels has created prideful students and parents who are quick to tell you if there child is reading above grade level. And it has also created frustrated students and distraught parents who lower performance expectation because they are falling behind in this vital language skill. Too often it is assumed that the poor reader has nothing to contribute to the discussion. Tragic mistake!

Let me point out that it is as logical to expect every child to be at the same place on the height and weight charts as it is to assume they should all be reading at the same level.

We believe it is vital to help students learn discussion skills and through that gain ability to logically present their viewpoints. We must make reading a means to an end not and end itself.

The complete Tweener Literacy Curriculum will be posted near October 1, 2008. It is a true language arts curriculum. It is designed especially for emerging readers and those beyond third grade who listen to a different drummer. Those who find the traditional language arts curriculum irrelevant or are plagued by aliteracy, the ability to read but the lack of interest in reading, will especially appreciate the Tweener Literacy Curriculum.

Tweener Literacy
Language Arts Study Guides

Baker Trittin Press is pleased to formally introduce the Tweener Literacy Language Arts Study Guides.

Parents choosing to homeschool their children appreciate the time saved by using the Tweener Literacy Study Guides.

The Tweener Literacy Curriculum centers around chapter books that are fast-paced, action-packed, and support Christian  family values. Geared especially for appeal to reluctant readers, aliterates, the Study Guide, has activities to re-enforce vocabulary expansion without repetition. The vocabulary list may also be effectively used for spelling.

We read to get information. We discuss this information to clarify our understanding of the relationship of what we just read to what we already knew. That's why the discussion questions are vital to the learning process. Questions must deal with more than facts, so we have created questions that relate to life, not just to a chapter. For instance, one chapter in Secret of Abbott's Cave involved the purchase of an expensive item, and the mother's concern was about the use of a credit card. "How old should you be to have a credit card of your own?" was one of the discussion questions for the chapter. Dad didn't need to read the chapter in order to have a valuable discussion about stewardship.

The wisdom of a reluctant reader tweener, "If it ain't worth talking about, it ain't worth reading." Students are expected to talk about math, science, and social studies, but most curricula ignore the need to discuss the voluntary reading. The young tweener was correct. The Tweener Literacy Language Arts Study Guides plan for that 'talkin' time."

Homeschool parents don't have time to develop these important questions for every chapter. The Tweener Literacy Language Arts Curriculum saves your time for discussing values instead of curriculum planning.

Fact questions, discussion questions, a vocabulary page, a cryptogram, a word search page, and a crossword puzzle is available for every chapter in each of the Tweener Literacy Language Arts Study Guides.
