The story is told in the first person narrative and is illustrated with contemporary illustrations in a coloring book style. Dr. Baker has written his book at the upper elementary reading level (age 9-12) but by no means should it be assumed this book is only for children. Sometimes one may find reading the Bible to be a challenge to grasp and understanding the intended message cumbersome. “Mark’s Story” will help! Christian education teachers, parents, homeschoolers or anyone should find this a worthwhile resource. The gospel is presented so both children and adults may lucidly understand. Christian education teachers and parents will definitely find this a worthy resource, but “Matthew’s Story” is for anyone with a desire to know more about understanding the Bible. Written especially for tweens, this book fills the gap between a child’s Bible storybook and the Bible itself. Following a brief opening in which Matthew introduces himself and sets the stage for his story, the book follows the chapter format and stays close to the biblical translation . . . But overall, the author has done an admirable job of making Matthew’s story come alive. The conversational, storyteller style and easy-to-understand language will make this a favorite for pre-teen readers.
